Due to the ongoing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, His Excellency President Mohammed Buhari requested that an intervention be conducted to cushion the most vulnerable households from the adverse effects of the emergency. One of the vulnerable groups are children between the ages of 5 to 12 years pupils in public primary schools, especially in classes 1-3, which constitute a large number of beneficiaries of the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).
This intervention was conceived because the NHGSFP was put on hold due to the pandemic which led to school closures, resulting in children not benefitting from the nutritious meals usually provided. In this regard, this intervention was aimed at supporting this category of vulnerable persons.
As part of Action Health Incorporated’s support of the implementation of the Take-Home Ration (THR) distribution is carried out in a transparent and accountable manner, AHI engaged sixty- three (63) monitors across Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, Ifo and Ado-Odo/Ota LGAs to monitor the process and document lessons, success stories and challenges in the process of the THR intervention. This intervention ran for a priod of three weeks from June 9th – June 23rd across the four LGAs monitored in Ogun state and included three stages:
- Identification of Households;
- Distribution of Vouchers and
- Distribution of THR to Beneficiaries
Parents of beneficiaries of the programme were excited to receive the palliatives, although some parents complained about the timing of receiving the palliative as it would have been more beneficial during the earlier days of the lockdown. Overall beneficiaries received palliatives as assigned to each LGA, though there were some challenges which ranged from delay in the supply of eggs due to logistics to lack of security at distribution centres to protect the palliatives.
